SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) – The San Francisco 49ers had the chance to show off their quarterback squad heading into the regular season.
Jimmy Garoppolo and Trey Lance commuted in the first two practices that ended with quarterback touchdowns that led San Francisco to a 34-10 victory over the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday.
“I just wanted to have some live action with it,” said coach Kyle Shanahan. “We did it in training a few times and it was the last time before entering the regular season. So this is the last time you can have the opportunity to do so. I kind of wanted to do it with this game.
Shanahan pivoted both of his quarterbacks in the first two practices against Raiders reinforcements as a tune-up for the regular season when he plans to use both Garoppolo and rookie Lance.
Garoppolo started and made it through the first three games before Lance came in and was handed over to Raheem Mostert for a 17-yard gain on a zone play play. Garoppolo returned for the next play and both QBs got five plays on that disc which ended with Garoppolo scrambling for a 1 yard TD.
“You could tell there’s been a couple times up the line where they still make calls and things like that,” Garoppolo said. “We see that it’s hard for them. So that’s what we tried to do.
The quarterback squad continued in the next practice with Garoppolo converting a fourth and a 1 before Lance scored two plays later on a goaltender 2 yards away.
“I was prepared for it. I think Jimmy was too, ”Lance said. “This is one of those things where we have repeated it. It was nice to have representatives of the game and to really see what it really feels like.
That ended the day for Garoppolo, who completed 4 of 7 passes for 64 yards to go with both carries.
Lance stayed in the game until the third quarter and finished 6 for 13 for 46 yards.
