3 keys to victory for the New York Giants against the Washington football team

What the Giants lack in time over a short week, they make up for in history.

Thursday Night Football marks the 177th regular season meeting between the Giants and Washington, with Big Blue holding a 104-68-4 advantage. The Giants have won each of the last five games, including a 2020 season sweep of the defending NFC East champions.

Here are three ways the Giants can keep the streak alive and, more importantly, clinch their first win of the season:

Get the ball out in time.

Washington, the second-largest defense in yards allowed last season, has first-round picks on the defensive front. The roster includes defensive ends Chase Young, the 2020 NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year and Montez Sweat, who joined the board with a sack from Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert in Week 1.

“They’re a good defense,” Giants quarterback Daniel Jones said. “It definitely starts up front. They have these two guys and a lot of guys who can take it out on passers-by and disrupt a game with their passing rush. We have to do a good job of getting the ball out on time and protecting, making sure we’re on the same page and communicating well. They’re definitely a good front and we’ll be ready for that. “

Asked specifically about Young, Jones added: “He’s a good player, he’s proven it. Like I said we’ll be ready for him. I think Herbert did a good job getting the ball out. on time, doing readings and being decisive there, so that’s the challenge. We’re going to protect well and then figure out where we’re at in terms of communication, be on the same page and then pull out the ball of the hands. “

Get out of the field in time.

The Giants struggled in key situations in Week 1, allowing the Broncos to convert their three fourth-down attempts. Denver quarterback Teddy Bridgewater entered his 50th regular season game last week. This week, the Giants face backup quarterback Taylor Heinicke, who will make his second career regular-season debut after starter Ryan Fitzpatrick injured his hip. The Giants, however, won’t take Heinicke lightly. He faced Tom Brady and the eventual Super Bowl Buccaneers champion in deep water in the Wild Card Round last January. Heinicke was signed as an emergency option last December, and now he will be called up again.

Challenge Washington in the open field.

Washington gave up the second under-play from 20 or more yards last season, credit for the disruption up front. The Giants, meanwhile, have a bunch of weapons looking to explode – Saquon Barkley, Kenny Golladay and Kyle Rudolph have all made their comebacks – after dropping rust in Game 1 of the season. At the same time, the Giants cannot try to do too much and lose football. They will have to be patient and choose their places.

“You play against this team, you have to be prepared to walk the field tick by tick by tick,” Judge said. “They’re a very good team coming off the field on the third down and into the red zone. They’re a very good team that don’t allow explosive play. They’re a good team to tackle. OK, you have to. make sure you try to challenge them on the pitch when you get the chance. But it’s a fundamentally strong team, they’re very prepared. They come and do what they do. “
