Big South, Ohio Valley announces football association starting in 2023

The Big South Conference and the Ohio Valley Conference have announced that they have signed a letter of intent to form a football association beginning in the 2023 season.

The agreement will combine football members from both conferences to “…ensure access to the NCAA championship.” Combining the two conferences will give them the required number of teams to earn an automatic FCS Playoff bid, similar to the ASUN-WAC deal last season.

“The Big South – Ohio Valley Conference Football Association will enhance the efforts of both conferences to provide greater opportunities for our student-athletes,” said Dr. J. Bradley Creed, President of the Big South Council of Football Members, President advice. CEOs and President of Campbell University. “This decision has the unanimous support of the Big South Conference football school CEOs, and we look forward to expanding and enlivening the competitive field for our teams. I congratulate President Glassman and his colleagues at the OVC for their role in establishing this collaboration.

According to the release, details of the Big South-OVC partnership and a football schedule for the 2023 season will be finalized in the coming months.

“The OVC is pleased to partner with the Big South to establish a new model of FCS football, aimed at ensuring exceptional competition and championship access for our student-athletes,” said Dr. David Glassman, President of the Eastern Illinois University and Chairman of the OVC Council of Presidents. “The world of intercollegiate athletics is changing and all members of the OVC look forward to working with Dr. Creed and the rest of the Presidents of the Deep South to establish a new paradigm for FCS football in our region. Additionally, we welcome the participation of other leagues interested in working together for the betterment of intercollegiate athletics.

Both the Deep South and the OVC have suffered member losses in recent months. The Big South lost Hampton and Monmouth to the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) beginning in 2022, while North Carolina A&T will leave for CAA in 2023. Affiliate members Kennesaw State and North Alabama also joined ASUN the last season.

The OVC also lost two affiliate members, Eastern Kentucky and Jacksonville State, at the ASUN conference last season. Austin Peay is also leaving for ASUN effective July 1, 2022.

As it stands, the Big South-OVC association would include Campbell, Charleston Southern, Eastern Illinois, Gardner-Webb, Murray State, Robert Morris, Southeast Missouri, Tennessee State, Tennessee Tech and UT Martin. Murray State, however, is in negotiations to leave the OVC for the Missouri Valley Football Conference.
