Freshman Recalls Reported Campus Attack After Tennessee Football Game

KNOXVILLE, Tennessee (WATE) – A freshman at the University of Tennessee had a disturbing experience over the weekend. Part of it is filmed.

Lydia Ernst says she was attacked on campus right after Saturday’s soccer game. She told us that a man she did not know had hit her several times. She says she was heading back to her dorm, near Melrose and Volunteer Boulevard, when a typical college football Saturday got scary, quickly.

“I just felt the punches and then the next thing I know I’m in a woman’s arms. She comforts me, I see people getting out of their cars to come and see me and see me. It was intense, ”Ernst said.

Ernst was able to record the moments just before she said she was punched in the face. The video shows her boyfriend being pushed around and threatened.

“I was yelling at him like ‘Stop, stop.’ He turns around. He looked at me as well and just hit me a few times, one in the face, ”she said.

Ernst said it started when she, her boyfriend and another friend were walking around campus. There were three men across the street, including the one she claimed hit her. There were a few jokes, although she says she really didn’t pay attention to what was said.

Things got out of hand and got violent. Ernst now has bruises and a black eye.

“I haven’t treated him yet. I don’t know how to treat it, I think I’m still in shock. It’s obviously a big deal, I agree, it’s a big deal. If I had seen another girl get hit, I would have felt it, I would have felt what everyone else is feeling. When it’s me, I don’t know how to react because I’m like ‘I still can’t believe it’, ”she said.

Two days later, Ernst hopes that she and the police can find the man responsible.

“No one should get a hold of a woman, no one should be violent anyway,” Ernst said. “I hope he will be brought to justice. I don’t wish anything bad on anyone, but I hope they get what is right.

UT police said the reported assault was under investigation. If you have any information about what happened or the people involved, they want to know. You can reach the agents at 865-974-3114.
