No.1 Georgia are a prohibitive favorite to keep their perfect season intact and go undefeated when they host Charleston Southern, an FCS program, between the hurdles on Saturday afternoon at Sanford Stadium in Athens, Ga. The Bulldogs’ defense continues to shine and has grown into one of the best units in college football since the turn of the century. Quarterback Stetson Bennett IV is now recognized as the undisputed starter for the Bulldogs and has a perfect chance to hone his skills ahead of the SEC Championship game on December 4th.
Charleston Southern is 4-5 this season, coming off a 32-24 double overtime victory over Garnder-Webb last weekend.
What to expect on Saturday afternoon? Let’s break the game down.
Georgia vs Charleston Southern: what to know
Bennett is the man: Can we stop talking about Bennett as a “game manager?” It’s clear at this point that he’s making a difference. Bennett is second nationally with 10.9 yards per attempt and Pro Football Focus underline that he is the most accurate passer in the country (60%) on passes that travel at least 20 yards down. In addition, he poses a significant threat on the pitch as we have seen throughout the season. It will be fascinating to see how coach Kirby Smart uses it this week given the rivalry with Georgia Tech and the SEC Championship game ahead.
Jordan Davis’ Heisman Campaign: The Bulldogs’ huge nose guard is soaring on Heisman’s odds charts and has the chance to improve his stats against the Buccaneers. That said, his stats are only part of the story. Davis’ impact in gobbling up doubles teams allowed his teammates to circulate around him and disrupt games even if Davis failed in the backfield. It’s a game that can prove how good Davis is in those two departments.
Will Cook … cook? Running back James Cook starred in the show last week in Georgia’s win over Tennessee, rushing for a career-high 104 yards and three total TDs in the 41-17 win. How much will it be used this weekend? Zamir White is the traditional Bulldogs’ No.1, but Cook and Kenny McIntosh also provided a lot of diversity for offensive coordinator Todd Monken. Will Monken involve Cook in various ways for the second week in a row? That could be a goal as playoff preparation heats up.
