JOB OF THE WEEK: financial accountant, football association

The football association [The FA] is the governing body of not-for-profit football in England. It is responsible for promoting and developing all levels of the game, from grassroots to professional play, and generates significant revenue to support investment in English football each year.

The FA oversees England’s international teams in men’s, women’s, youth and disability football, as well as managing the FA National League system and competitions including the Emirates FA Cup, Barclays FA Women’s Super League , the FA Women’s Championship and Vitality Women’s FA Cup, and the world-class facilities of Wembley Stadium and St. George’s Park, all with the aim of uniting the game and inspiring the nation.

The role

The FA is looking for an ACA or ACCA qualified Financial Accountant to support the Senior Group Finance Director and work alongside the Financial Accounting team.

Main responsibilities

Heart

  • Financial Accountant responsible for all monthly FA Group business areas including:

    • Preparation and posting of monthly newspapers

    • Preparation of monthly balance sheet reconciliations including liaison with Commercial Finance to review and challenge variance analysis

    • Opening, closing and progress of the general ledger

    • Preparation of monthly schedule and financial accounting schedule

    • Prepare, understand and deliver the EBITDA analysis below

    • Approval of changes to the chart of accounts

  • Review grant revenue schedules ensuring that grant revenue is properly recognized and tracked throughout the life of the grants.

  • Liaise with commercial finance, review commercial agreements and ensure proper accounting treatment

  • Manage the internal audit process, including the relationship with our internal audit vendor

  • Responsible for managing investments and maintaining the group fixed assets register and ensuring that additions and disposals are properly accounted for in accordance with group accounting policies

  • Manage the AP/AR financial accounting relationship and assist with vendor due diligence

  • Stakeholder management across the enterprise

Compliance

  • Daily management of the external audit, including assistance in the preparation of the financial statements of the FA group and the subsidiaries

  • Ensure timely completion of interactive accounts for the FA website, liaising with group communications

  • Maintain group accounting policies

  • Central contact for technical accounting questions

  • Ensure legal compliance and filing deadlines are met

  • Review office of national statistics returns and ensure timely filing

  • Perform additional duties as required to meet changing priorities of the FA group.

  • Comply with all company policies and procedures to ensure the highest standards of health, safety and welfare are maintained.

  • ACA or ACCA qualified

  • Self-taught who excels at time management and prioritizing workflows

  • Ability to work well under pressure and meet tight deadlines

  • Understanding the wider impact of decisions and ensuring all stakeholders are appropriately engaged

Desirable

  • Experience with managing financial accounting systems (Proactis, Great Plains, Management Reporter, Jet)

Please note that unless you have a home contract, your FA contract will specify a fixed location of Wembley Stadium, St. George’s Park or our Processing Centre.

We are currently working under a hybrid work model where the expectation is to work from your contract location for part of the week, and as needed by the team. The remaining days can be worked remotely. We will continue to monitor this model and it may be adjusted in the future if deemed necessary.
