ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreit delivered a pretty scathing review of a college football team he clearly considers overrated.
On Saturday’s edition of ESPN’s “College GameDay,” Herbstreit had a rather brutal take on the Texas A&M Aggies after their upset loss to Appalachia State last Saturday. Herbstreit said the Aggies had been victims of “unwarranted preseason hype” and didn’t deserve to be ranked No. 6 in the first place.
“Unwarranted preseason hype! No. 6, high expectations for a team that didn’t deserve this,” Herbstreit said, via Saturday Down South’s Sydney Hunte. “They beat Alabama last year. , they have all these great recruits, and all of a sudden everyone thinks they’re in Alabama. It does not work like that.
Herbstreit is undoubtedly right. Although the Aggies beat Alabama in 2021, they had yet to show consistency to make it look like more than one. There are also clear problems on offense, as evidenced by the fact that the team made a quarterback change very soon after the loss.
On the other hand, this is the fifth year for Jimbo Fisher, and for some there is a feeling that his program should be a bit more advanced. His recruiting class was so good that it became a legitimate source of controversy before the season. Expecting this class to dominate immediately is certainly asking too much, but a little consistency would be welcome from A&M at this point.
