NEWS AND NOTES

Jones leaves injured

Redshirt senior safety Tyreque Jones knocked out Utah State quarterback Logan Bonner in the Aggies’ third game of the game.

It was Jones’ second interception of the season and the third of his career. The pick set up Jonah Damas’ 28-yard field goal.

But Jones left the field and entered the injury tent on Utah State’s second possession, and he was then shown on the CBS show walking to the locker room.

Broncos without a first offensive lineman

Boise State was without an offensive lineman starting on Saturday against Utah State, and the Broncos have no players absent due to COVID-19, the schedule announced shortly before kick-off.

Center Kekaniokoa Holomalia-Gonzalez missed his fourth game in a row for undisclosed reasons. Sixth-year center Donte Harrington started in his stead.

Defensive tackle Divine Obichere, who joined the program last year as a college transfer, was also out for undisclosed reasons.

Pass rusher Aisa Kelemete (Highland High) is also on the inactive list. He announced on social media earlier this week that after the fifth operation of his career, he was stepping away from football.

Nose tackle Scale Igiehon remains out after taking time off from the team for personal reasons.

Crowe and Herberg announce NIL agreements

A pair of Boise State players from local high schools have had a pretty good week.

Running back Tyler Crowe (Skyview) and passing thrower Dylan Herberg (Timberline) – both of whom have joined the Broncos as substitutes – announced Wednesday that they have received full scholarships.

On Friday, they both announced sponsorship deals with Ridley’s Family Markets.

Crowe was named 5A CIS Player of the Year in his final season at Skyview after racking up 69 tackles in defense and recording 1,830 rushing yards, 495 receiving yards and 25 attacking touchdowns. He led Boise State with 45 rushing yards against UTEP.

Herberg took home all-state honors after recording 105 tackles, five interceptions and 15 tackles for losses in his final season at Timberline.

College football players can monetize their name, image, and likeness after the NCAA adopted an interim policy in July, as NIL laws came into effect in several states.

Shakir adds another chord

Boise State wide receiver Khalil Shakir also announced his latest sponsorship deal on Friday.

Shakir announced a deal with Crave Delivery by posting a photo on Instagram of himself and his teammates sitting around a picnic table for a meal.

Shakir announced his first sponsorship deal with Pro Image Sports last week.

Quick shots

The Broncos wore white jerseys, white pants and white helmets. … Team captains Khalil Shakir and Kekaula Kaniho have been joined by Shane Irwin and Jake Stetz as match captains. … Boise State won the toss and carried over to the second half. … Boise State was led down the field by safety JL Skinner, who carried Dan Paul Hammer …. The Boise State defense went five straight scoreless quarterbacks between the Oklahoma State second half and the first three quarters against Utah State. The last time this happened was 2017 in the second to fourth quarters against BYU and the first half against SDSU.

The Boise State football team have won 21 straight conference opener games. The Broncos are trying to reach 22nd place when they face Utah State today. And they’ll be looking for their sixth straight win over the Aggies in Mountain West action.

Boise State’s most recent loss in a league opener was a 17-10 loss to North Texas in 1999, when the Broncos were in the Big West. The Broncos are 38-13 all-time in opening the conference.
