The Ohio State No.7 got off to a 3-0 Big Ten start this year with offense, and now Maryland will visit for Homecoming weekend in Columbus, Ohio on Saturday. The Buckeyes have had a clear advantage in the series since the Terrapins joined the Big Ten, going 6-0 in the series and averaging 58.3 points per game in those wins.
Maryland comes into play after a very disappointing 51-14 Friday night loss to Iowa. While the top five Hawkeyes only handed the Terps their first loss of the season, the final margin sets a very different tone heading into Saturday’s divisional game in Columbus. Maryland will be hoping this edition of the series is closer to the 52-51 double-overtime affair between these two teams in 2018, and less like last week’s opportunity against a similar contender in the Big Ten Championship.
Ryan Day is also putting his 17-0 Big Ten record at stake, along with Ohio State’s 20-game winning streak in conference. The Buckeyes are 73-19-5 all-time in Homecoming games and punters are in favor of another Homecoming win with a three touchdown gap for the betting line.
Ohio State vs. Maryland: Need to Know
The Buckeyes’ attack catches fire at the right time: Redshirt’s freshman quarterback CJ Stroud missed out on Week 4’s win over Akron and looked fantastic on his return to action in a 52-13 win at Rutgers last week. Stroud leads the Big Ten in passing touchdowns, passing yards per game and quarterback score, and while the Buckeyes’ offense has had slow starts in the first two games of the season – a victory at Minnesota and loss at home to Oregon – this group is emerging as one of the best in the country. Ohio State leads the nation in total offense with 555.6 yards per game and 8.57 yards per game. He ranks fourth nationally in points (45.0 points per game) and is tied for second in third-down conversions (55.2).
Maryland’s offense straddles Tagovailoa, but comes across a key pass receiver: Just behind Stroud in those Big Ten passing yardage rankings is Taulia Tagovailoa of Maryland, who is currently averaging 299.4 yards per game and is able to set an academic record for passing yards in one. season. Only four Power Five quarterbacks have averaged more passing yards per game since Tagovailoa took over from Maryland in 2020 – Ole Miss’s Matt Corral, North Carolina’s Sam Howell, Pitt’s Kenny Pickett and Pitt’s Brennan Armstrong Virginia – and he lights up the stats sheet at a high clip with a completion percentage (72.2) that ranks first in the Big Ten and sixth nationally.
Unfortunately for Tagovailoa, the offense suffered a huge loss this week, with senior wide receiver Dontay Demus Jr. ruled out for the remainder of the year with a knee injury. Demus still leads the Big Ten in receiving yards and his average of 101.4 yards per game ranks him in the top 15 nationally. While there are plenty of talented wide receiver options for Maryland, it’s a huge loss going forward.
Ohio State Defensive Coaching Reshuffle Update: One of the changes Ryan Day made after the 1-1 start was to give back-up coach Matt Barnes the role of play call. Defensive coordinator Kerry Coombs remains a key part of the staff, but now Barnes has more responsibility for the performance of the unit. Interestingly enough, Barnes has never been a coordinator before, but he called plays when he was a linebacker coach in Maryland (2016-18). The Ohio State offense has seen better results since the change, but competition was factored into that success as well. Maryland are the best offensive team Ohio State has faced since Barnes took over as play call duty, so this will be a fairer ranking opportunity for how the Buckeyes’ defense has developed over the course of last month.

Ohio State vs Maryland prediction, pick
Featured Game | Ohio State Buckeyes vs. Maryland Terrapins
A play over total is my favorite betting angle because Maryland should be able to have some success in the passing game against the Buckeyes defense and a lot of runs will be scored on both sides. But in the end a lot more points will be scored by the home favorites, who I think should score 50 as this tour continues for CJ Stroud. Prediction: Ohio State (-21)
