Oklahoma’s No.4 will host Big 12 rival TCU in Norman, Oklahoma on Saturday as he appears to remain one of the last undefeated teams in the country. The Sooners are climbing pretty high as they just grab one of the most exciting wins in the program’s illustrious history. First-year quarterback Caleb Williams led a 21-point comeback on Texas in Week 6, earning Oklahoma their second-biggest comeback in program history, which has them catapulted into the top four.

TCU ended a two-game slip by crushing Texas Tech 52-31 on the road. Quarterback Max Duggan only needed 10 attempted passes to put the game on the sidelines. Running backs Kendre Miller and Zach Evans totaled 328 yards and 5 TDs in just 29 carries combined. Meanwhile, losses to SMU and Texas were just one score.

The Sooners have had the TCU number since Lincoln Riley took over as offensive coordinator. Oklahoma have won seven straight clashes averaging 13.9 points per game, including a victory in the 2017 Big 12 Championship Game. OU holds a historic 16-5 advantage after beating TCU 33-14 in 2020 behind 132 yards and two touchdowns from receiver Marvin Mims.

Oklahoma vs TCU: Need to Know

Quarterback controversy: Sooner fan chants were finally heard. Starting QB Spencer Rattler was benched after his second turnover against Texas and Caleb Williams ran with the opportunity. Now Riley is playing the competition close to the vest, declining to name a starter and acknowledging that he might not do so at any point before the game. Williams threw for 212 yards, rushed for 88 yards and scored 3 touchdowns in the win.

Defensive disappointment: TCU coach Gary Patterson is one of the great defensive minds of the modern age, but this defense is by far the worst since the Horned Frogs joined the Big 12. The Frogs have four consecutive years of defense. among the top 30, but this unit ranks No.99 in total defense and gives up over 6.5 yards per game. TCU is particularly bad against the run, sitting No. 116 nationally at over 206 yards per game and 5.2 yards per carry. The Sooners recorded 339 yards and 4 touchdowns against Texas, which doesn’t bode well for the game.

Start the racing game: Oklahoma had been reluctant to rely on their running backs for five games with just two stock players on the depth chart. Third string Marcus Major was deemed eligible ahead of the Red River Showdown and the strategy changed dramatically. Riley handed the ball to top rusher Kennedy Brooks 25 times, and combined with Williams’ injection into the roster, had his best offensive performance of the season.

Athletics meet: Despite having an offensive coordinator with air raid training, TCU has one of the most powerful rush attacks in America. The Horned Frogs are averaging 5.74 yards per team carry. Miller and Evans rank 3rd and 6th nationally in yards per carry, respectively, while Evans rank 3rd in the Big 12 with 117.2 rushing yards per game. Even Duggan has over 1,200 rushing yards in his career. In order for TCU to compete, it needs to control this game on the pitch.

Playoff implications: The 2021 season has been one of the most chaotic in recent memory, but the Sooners have managed to avoid any flaws. If Oklahoma can maintain their status quo, the Sooners still have a very manageable path to the college football playoffs. What Oklahoma needs more than anything is a declared victory – its five FBS wins have come by one score or less.
