Talk to Sky Sports News (19/06/22 15:05), Tim Vickery has given an update on Bayer Leverkusen’s Piero Hincapie, who has recently been linked with a potential move to Tottenham.
Hincapie moved to Leverkusen last season and has impressed with his solid performances in the 27 Bundesliga games he has played this season (TransferMarkt).
Athletic reported that Fabio Paratici was keen to sign a left-wing centre-back for Antonio Conte’s side this summer.
The Sun is now claiming Spurs are interested in Hincapie, 20, and have been instructed by the German club to pay £34m to acquire his services.
However, South American football expert Vickery is worried about the potential signing: “It’s another one where I’ve just been delighted to have been wrong. He’s the first choice for Ecuador. is a left central defender.
“He has a nice left foot. Gets the ball out of defense very well. Which makes it perhaps interesting for a three-way formation. If you’re going to play a three, then two of them have to be able to get the ball out of defense.
“When he joined the Ecuador team a year ago, the Ecuadorian coach was really young. When he threw it away, I thought “no”. During this Copa America, he made a howler out of a game.
“But if you’re a centre-back you have to make mistakes as you develop. Subsequently, he has already moved from Ecuador to Argentina and he had a good season in Argentina. He has also been very successful in the Bundesliga.
“Again, I would be a bit worried about a lack of physicality. But I was very, very impressed with his progress. And I have learned to trust the judgment of Alfaro, the Ecuador coach, because he continues to be young.

It would be great to have another left-footed centre-back to compete with the impressive Ben Davies next season.
Hincapie’s ability to travel with the ball and cross the lines would complement Conte’s system perfectly. Whether he would have the physical capabilities to thrive in the Prem is another question.
