Copper Country football teams are noticeably missing in this week’s UP Sportswriters and Sportscasters poll. In the poll of 11 players, Marquette received all five first place votes, followed by Kingsford, Sault Ste. Marie, Westwood and Negaunee. Menominee and Calumet received Honorable Mention votes. In the eight-player poll, Ontonagon placed fourth, behind North Central, Forest Park and Pickford. Newberry was fifth and Norway received an honorable mention vote.

Friday night’s football game between Houghton and West Iron County has been called off. The Wykons have struggled with low numbers and injuries all season, and don’t have enough healthy players to enter the field. The Gremlins will take a 1-0 forfeit victory.

College football

The Finlandia men’s soccer team shutout Lincoln Christian 7-0 yesterday. Mohamed Koroma had a hat trick, Sam Williams scored twice and Bryson Beck and Keegan Lerchenfeldt each found the net once. The Lions play at Illinois College tonight.

Koroma was named the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference men’s offensive soccer player of the week. He is the first Lion male soccer player to win a weekly C2C award. Koroma scored two goals, including the match winner, in last week’s game against Lincoln Christian. He added a third count in Finlandia’s loss to Illinois Tech.

College volleyball

Michigan Tech’s Anna Jonynas was named GLIAC’s North Division Volleyball Player of the Week. It is his second such honor this season, and the third of his career. Jonynas had 28 kills in the Huskies’ victories over Lake Superior State and Northwood last weekend.

MLB

The late return of the Detroit Tigers was not up to par, falling to the Chicago White Sox 8-7 yesterday. The Sox took command in the fourth inning, chasing Detroit starter Matt Manning as they scored six times. They scored two points in the seventh against Ian Krol. Detroit collected a few runs early on, then broke for five in the eighth inning, but couldn’t complete the comeback. Jonathan Schoop scored for the Bengals.

The Tigers visit the Minnesota Twins tonight. Tyler Alexander will be leaving for Detroit. Coverage will begin at 7:20 a.m. on 99.3 The Lift.

The Milwaukee Brewers took the day off yesterday and open a series in St. Louis tonight. Brandon Woodruff will face Adam Wainwright.
