The main match of Round 6 of the Premier League GFA BOV Gozo Football League was between Nadur Youngsters and Kercem Ajax, who were both aiming for three points to take the lead on the table. The match however ended in a goalless draw so that Nadur remains at the top of the standings with two points ahead of Kercem but the latter has one game in hand.
The outcome of the encounter was a fair result as both teams showed they have the potential to be serious challengers for the main honor this season. The game in the end was dominated by both defensive departments prevailing over the respective forwards so action on goal was quite rare. While Nadur and Kercem both showed their strength in this head-to-head clash, both teams also confirmed the difficulties they had already faced in other matches in the league. Nadur, who had lost centre-back Lucas Baretto Da Silva to suspension and striker Joseph Zammit who was unfit to play due to injury, again found it extremely difficult to convert his attacking play in good goalscoring opportunities. Nadur only managed to put pressure on the Kercem defense in the closing stages of the encounter, but they still failed to wrap up their game with any serious attempts at a goal. On the other hand, Kercem, who are the only undefeated side in the league, had their best game in the first half but risked compromising the positive performance as they failed to capitalize on his best chances to score. In this match, Kercem ended up defending the positive result instead of aiming to win the full points at stake.
Nadur tried to take control of the game but Kercem was well organized in his defense and very efficient with his breaks, so the match turned out to be an open clash where either team could have taken the lead.
1′ Kercem almost surprised his opponents from the kick-off and after 13 seconds of play, a strike from Pablo Vinicius Ferreira narrowly missed the target.
11′ Kercem is again dangerous on a strike from Bruno Da Cruz following a personal action but the ball ends wide.
12′ Nadur replies with a strike from Predrag Dordevic from an ideal position which is deflected for a corner by central defender Samuel Azzopardi.
13′ Kercem operates a counter-break where Gabriel Cardona releases Bruno Da Cruz but the latter sees his low shot blocked by Nadur goalkeeper Steve Sultana.
28′ Nadur concedes another break to his opponents on an initiative from Gabriel Cardona but the striker has his attempt blocked in time by the defense.
29′ Nadur responds with a shot from an angle by Igor Nedeljkovic which ends up off target.
34′ Nadur could have capitalized better when Predrag Dordevic took the ball from the Kercem defense and passed to Igor Nedeljkovic but the latter finished above the crossbar from an ideal position.
36′ Kercem again created danger in the Nadur area on a personal action from Pablo Vinicius Ferreira but the latter saw his low shot directed towards the far post which ended up just wide.
40′ (claims for penalty) Nadur claims a penalty following a tackle at the entrance to the area from Kercem goalkeeper Daniel Spiteri on Igor Nedeljkovic.
43′ Kercem passed very close to the goal but a low shot from outside the box by Bruno Da Cruz was deflected by a defender and the ball stopped a few centimeters from the goal with the keeper beaten.
45+1′ (claims for penalty) Kercem also claimed a penalty, alleging manipulation by Nadur defender Manwel Tabone at the entrance to the area, following a strike from Bruno Da Cruz.
After the restart, the game continued to be hotly contested but the two defensive departments were often in control of the respective forwards so action on goal was very rare.
4′ Nadur goalkeeper Steve Sultana was called in to make an important intervention to prevent Kercem from scoring when he barely blocked a good angled shot from Karl Formosa.
28′ Nadur’s first chance in the second half came through a lob from Joseph Mario Vella, after a reception from Gianluca Muscat, which ended just above the crossbar.
30′ Nadur could have created more danger but a header from Gustavo Dourado Ferreira, following a cross from Igor Nedeljkovic, ended wide.
