England coach John Herdman, who led the Canadian women’s team to a successful Olympic bronze medal in 2012 and 2016, showed Les Rouges in Qatar in their first qualifying campaign in charge.
“We just qualified for the World Cup, it’s a legitimate footballing country,” said Herdman, Herdman la, last worked in England as Sunderland academy coach there is over 20 years old.
“When I took over and said, ‘We’re going to qualify for the World Cup’, I don’t think they believed us. I’m happy for them because all these fans have been waiting and waited and waited, and clung to us – and here we go.
“I think this country never believed in us because we gave them nothing to believe in. They believe now.
“Now is the time for everyone to support football and unite because we can be a power.”
The United States, Mexico, Costa Rica and Panama are all at odds for Concacaf’s final two automatic qualifying spots for the 2022 World Cup, which begins on November 21.
