WILLIAMSBURG — The Williamsburg Colonials are a relatively new semi-pro soccer team that call the peninsula home.
The team kicked off its inaugural season in the fall of 2021 by participating in the Atlantic Coast Football Alliance. The Williamsburg Colonials have since joined the United States Soccer Federation, where the team now competes with other Virginia and Hampton Roads organizations such as the Norfolk Ducks and Chesapeake Sharks. The Williamsburg Colonials also have regular season games against a few North Carolina teams like the Roanoke Rapids Pirates and Carolina Bears.
One of the primary goals of the Williamsburg Colonials is to provide opportunities for football players who may have been overlooked by college teams.
“I kind of put the team together because there are a lot of high school kids in the area who still want to play but couldn’t go and play in college,” Williamsburg owner David Willis said. Colonials, in an interview. with WYDaily. “It was like my main goal, just to give the younger guys more playing time.”
Willis says the majority of players on the roster are actually Williamsburg locals. Plus, there are athletes from Newport News and Hampton.
The Colonials participate in both a spring season and a fall season. The team is finishing its second spring season. So far, it has seven wins and just one loss on the nine-game spring 2022 schedule. The team still has one regular-season game scheduled before the spring playoffs.
Local semi-professional athletes are actually well positioned to kick off a playoff series. If the Williamsburg Colonials win the final game of the regular season, they will earn the number two seed and a playoff game at home. If the team loses, they will get the number three seed and still receive a home playoff game.
The final game of the regular season is an away game against the Chesapeake Sharks scheduled for May 28. The playoffs begin in June.
The next fall season seems to start towards the end of August. This season the team held their home games at Surry County High School in Dendron. However, this fall the team will play home games at Wanner Stadium at the Warhill Sports Complex.
Currently, the football team is looking for people interested in joining their ownership group. The team is also looking for interested investors, coaches and football players.
